SENTIENCE
A Creative|Cultural Research Project.
'SENTIENCE'Â is an investigative/creative research project headed by Jacki Sheppard, which began in 2017. The project is a never ending and ever-transforming organism that is reflecting of Culture and Life as entities that evolve, and which are informed by Country, Sky Country, and Ancestor.
What is SENTIENCE?

SENTIENCE explores the tensions between violent colonial forms of knowledge acquisition vs First Nations methods of attuning to and “knowing” ourselves, and the world around us.
At the core of SENTIENCE is an interrogation and promotion of the idea that Intuition and Instinct are legitimate forms of acquiring and implementing knowledge, and has strongly informed the shaping and management of our communities on this continent since time immemorial.
The project challenges the notions of so-called legitimate and non-legitimate knowledge systems. Jacki draws on First Nations philosophies and methodologies of connecting to story, land, and self, remaining intentional to stay in tandem with, and guidance of Country, Elders and Ancestors.
Using a multiplicity of creative mediums, Jacki is expanding, exploring, and attuning their creative insight to time, place and story, using movement, embodiment, Somatics and digital documentation.

With permission from their Elders, Jackie will be looking to use SENTIENCE to revive a Tagalaka/Dagalag creation story.

- Advocacy.

Jackie is investigating the role of intuition as a legitimate knowledge systems. Through her discoveries, she will be working towards building a flexible, fluctuating and evolving framework that she will adapt and incorporate within her own life and professional life; And trial the implementation of this Framework within her Cultural, professional and personal life. Jackie will be walking the crossroads between city and Country, with the purposes of reclaiming Blak Knowledge; To advocate for the legitimacy of Indigenous Knowledge bases and ways of being; and to work towards protecting Blak Knowledge from being stolen, hoarded, commodified & colonised.

- A Call to Action

'A Call to Action' means how it sounds - answering the calls of the Land and of Ancestor by taking action and bringing our dreams and apparitions into physical manifestation, with the guidance of, and in collaboration with community and cultural leaders. This element of the project is executed with utmost care, respect, consideration, and deliberation. It honours the input given by Ancestors and the wisdom of the land.

- Obligations

A fundamental aspect of this work is to adhere to Cultural Protocol by remaining in communication with, and being guided by Elders, Cultural leaders, Ancestors and Land. These protocols and obligations can shift and vary depending on location and Clan Group. It is a part of Jackie's process and responsibilities to follow Protocol and seek guidance along the journey.
Another aspect of Obligation is to be in active participation with Cultural expectations, practices and discoveries.
